FAQs

What can we expect in a typical session?
Sessions focus on creating a safe space where both partners feel heard. You’ll explore patterns in your relationship, deepen your emotional understanding, and discover new ways to connect and communicate.
What if one of us is unsure about starting therapy?
That’s common. Often one partner is hesitant at first. After our initial session, I’ll meet with each of you individually for one or two sessions. We’ll take time to make sure I understand each of your perspectives before I meet with you again as a couple. We’ll work at a pace that feels comfortable to you, allowing space for each person’s concerns.
How long does couples therapy usually take?
Most couples complete their therapy in half a year or less. I’ve had some couples complete their therapy in just a few sessions, and several who have seen me for more than a year. The duration can be influenced by whether either partner is a trauma survivor, how long the couple has been distressed, and how severe their distress is before they started therapy.
Can therapy help even if we’re thinking about separation?
Absolutely! Therapy can support clarity, respectful decision-making, and healing — whether you choose to reconnect or part ways. Although most couples strengthen their relationship, not everyone chooses to stay together. But even couples who choose to separate can get to a place where they feel secure about their decision, improve their communication, and feel mutually respectful — this is especially important if they have children together.
Are there couples who you won’t see for therapy?
I won’t see couples with a recent history of domestic violence. Our sessions bring up powerful emotions, and it’s important that the partners don’t threaten each other’s safety. I have also worked successfully with couples who are in ongoing recovery from alcohol or drugs, but not when either partner has an untreated addiction.
When do you see clients?
I try to be available when you are. In addition to weekday appointments, I also see clients weekday evenings and Sundays.
How much does it cost?
The charge for a 50-minute session is $200. I don’t charge for the time I spend reviewing our sessions, writing my notes, and planning for our next appointment.
Do you accept insurance?
I am out-of-network, which means I don’t bill insurance directly and my clients pay me for their therapy at the end of each session. I want to prioritize your care without the limitations often imposed by insurance companies. Many companies require me to assign one of you an individual mental health diagnosis (like Depression), restrict the number or type of sessions, or compromise your confidentiality by requiring me to send them your detailed session notes. I can provide you with a superbill, which has the billing codes needed so you can submit it for reimbursement, depending on your benefits. If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Healthcare Savings Account (HSA) it can also be used to pay for your therapy. I can offer a reduced fee to couples who get benefits from WIC, FoodShare, or SSDI.
